In Thomaston, the homeowner has been monitoring radon levels above 5 pCi/L and is very concerned about reducing the level to below 2 pCi/L.
A two-point radon mitigation system was recommended to provide broader coverage throughout the home. The primary system will exit through the back of the house, while a second extraction point will be installed near the front of the house in the gym area.
The homeowner also requested that the radon fan be hardwired, but specifically does not want it connected to the washing machine outlet. This will allow the mitigation system to have a dedicated and reliable power connection.
In Thomaston, we were called in to mitigate radon in a ranch-style home with a particularly difficult basement: a 1,000 sq. ft. area consisting entirely of dirt, rock, and ledge. These conditions make radon gas more difficult to control, as the soil surface is uneven and porous.
The homeowner’s radon level was measured at 8 pCi/L, and given the challenging layout, we designed a solution involving four interior vents—two intake vents to pull radon from below the slab and two outtake vents to expel it effectively. We installed about 100 feet of ductwork across the basement to allow the airflow to reach every zone, improving suction coverage even in harder-to-reach corners.
A Continuous Radon Monitor (CRM) was placed upstairs to collect data post-installation, ensuring that the levels are reduced and stable. This project is a great example of how even the most uneven foundations can be managed with the right design and proper air handling.
